The Dirty Dozen

In my conversations with friends during my visit to Philly, the topic of organic food came up a bunch of times. Living and working where I do, I have access both to lots of information and lots of high-quality organic food.

Now, we don't all have perfect choices. But we make the best choices we can - it can be hard to get good information to make the 'best' choices.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) always recommends organic, but you can't always find it. They have a Guide featuring the 12 fruits and veggies with the most and least pesticides so you'll know which ones to buy organic, and which conventionally-grown ones are okay when organic isn't available.

EWG analyzed over 42,000 of the latest government tests for pesticide residues on commonly-eaten fruits and vegetables. Then they ranked the results based on six measures of pesticide loads, even after washing and peeling. Download your printer-friendly PDF Guide here: http://www.foodnews.org/getguide/.

If you are interested in buying organic, here are the top 12 foods you should focus on - these retain the highest level of pesticides.

Rank - Fruit or Veggie - Score
1 (worst) - Peaches - 100 (highest pesticide load)
2 - Apples - 96
3 - Sweet Bell Peppers - 86
4 - Celery - 85
5 - Nectarines - 84
6 - Strawberries - 83
7 - Cherries - 75
8 - Lettuce - 69
9 - Grapes (imported) - 68
10 - Pears - 65
11 - Spinach - 60
12 - Potatoes - 58
