Erica Fernandez

At work this morning we had an amazing speaker. A young woman who rallied her community (mostly poor, latino agricultural workers) in Oxnard to fight against a polluting Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) facility that would have bisected their neighborhoods.

This young lady educated herself, her classmates, and got her community to publicly gather to protest and let the California Lands Council and the California Coastal Commission that they cared about this issue.

Erica Fernandez is 17 years old, and in the spirit of Martin Luther King. Jr. and César Chavez, she is outspoken and passionate in support of her people and the environment. She won a Brower Youth Award, and wants to go to Harvard and become a lawyer ("because I love to talk, and argue," she said) and continue to support her people.

She had a room full of adults in tears, talking about her family, her passion and her cause. This girl is something!

You can read her amazing story in the local paper.
